主耶稣不单重视自己退到安静的地方来亲近父神，祂也带领门徒退到安静的地方。祂对门徒说：“你们来，同我暗暗地到旷野地方去歇一歇。”（可六31）
退修是把时间分别出来，从日常操作中，用这一段时间去看看我们内心（to look inside）以及和审查（investigate）我们的生活。
